Start your exploration of this remarkable city, known for its award-winning museums, burgeoning music scene, and memorable dining options. Begin your day with visits to the following significant sites:
  • Nyamata Genocide Memorial: This memorial, situated in a former church, commemorates the 1994 genocide. It stands as a somber reminder of the tragic events that unfolded.
  • Kigali Genocide Memorial Center: A poignant tribute to the victims of the 1994 genocide; this center serves as designed to educate visitors about the global significance of the genocide and its impact.
After a morning of reflection and learning, enjoy a traditional African lunch at a local restaurant. Then, continue your city tour, including: After lunch, visit Kimironko Market and immerse yourself in the vibrant and bustling atmosphere of one of Kigali’s largest markets. Explore the stalls brimming with fresh produce, fabrics, and local crafts.
  • Inema Arts Center: Founded in 2012, this center showcases Rwanda’s artistic community. Shop for art, traditional Rwandese crafts, and jewelry as meaningful gifts to take home.
After your insightful tour of Kigali, depart the city and head towards the Nyungwe Forest National Park. This biologically diverse forest is like a scene from a fairy tale, with towering Mahogany trees, lush ferns, orchids, and a rich canopy of life. Check in at your hotel and take in the jungle views. Your day begins with an early start at 4:00 A.M. from your lodge. You’ll embark on a guided trek deep into the forest in search of a chimpanzee family. Once located, you’ll have the privilege of spending one hour observing these remarkable creatures in their natural habitat. The dense forest may pose some challenges, but the playful nature and human-like behaviors of the chimps make the trek well worth it. Today, you’ll make your way to Volcanoes National Park with an exciting journey that includes stops in Kibuye and Gisenyi. En route, take a break for lunch at your hotel. In the afternoon, you’ll visit the Dian Fossey Museum, dedicated to the American naturalist who dedicated her life to protecting mountain gorillas. Embark on a hike from the trailhead at the research station to see the cabin where she was tragically murdered in 1985. The nearby grave where Dian Fossey and 20 of her beloved mountain gorillas are buried serves as a poignant reminder of her incredible dedication to conservation.  The hike take approximately 1.5 hours and requires a moderate level of fitness, offering opportunities to spot forest hogs, elephants, primates, and diverse bird species.
